About Brynnen

Brynnen Ford has more than 30 years of experience leading, teaching, and advising in colleges, universities, and PreK–12 schools. She has studied, taught at, or visited over 275 U.S. and international institutions (both in person and virtually). As a parent of two Seattle-based young adults, she’s navigated private and public school systems, admissions processes, and transitions firsthand.

She earned her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies from the University of Washington, taught at Seattle University, and served in academic leadership roles within Seattle Public Schools (most recently at Leschi Elementary). Her scholarship and work focus on creating excellent, equitable schools—especially for Black and Brown students—and dismantling systems that perpetuate systemic racism.

When her oldest child began applying to college, Brynnen tapped into her background as an admissions interviewer at Swarthmore College, her practitioner experience, and her desire to make the admissions process more accessible. She apprenticed with a full-service admissions advisor and pursued additional training to bring all that expertise into one place.

At her core, Brynnen is both practitioner and parent. She’s been through sleepless nights, anxiety about “what comes next,” and critical decisions about fit, values, and identity. She knows what it feels like to want a guide who truly sees and hears your family.

“Brynnen’s support and insight during my college application process gave me the confidence I needed to tackle a task that initially seemed impossible.” — Henry, NYU

Through Schooling Doula, Brynnen walks beside families, translating institutional knowledge into clear, actionable steps so that students and caregivers can make more confident decisions.

Brynnen is a great listener. She really genuinely cares. … She helped break down the monumental task of applying for college into manageable chunks. It never felt overwhelming.

The heart of Schooling Doula’s college coaching is one-on-one partnership. Brynnen Ford, Ph.D., works directly with every student and family to tailor a plan that aligns with their goals, values, and timeline. As you collaborate with Brynnen to build your college list and application strategy—deciding where to apply and how to approach each school’s essays—she also advises on financial fit, helping families consider affordability as part of thoughtful list development. In more complex circumstances, such as divorce or unique employment situations, she may consult with financial aid specialists early in the process to ensure your strategy reflects both academic and financial realities. Throughout your work together, you are also supported by a dedicated team of experienced professionals:

  • Essay Specialists (Included) – College application writing is a distinct genre, different in structure, voice, and word choice from traditional academic writing. Each essay is reviewed by both Brynnen and a dedicated essay specialist, ensuring multiple expert perspectives. Students receive thoughtful, personalized feedback from a real writer within 1–2 business days—strengthening their writing, clarifying their personal narrative, and supporting an authentic application process.

  • Financial Aid Application Support (Optional Add-On) – For families who would like comprehensive, hands-on assistance with the financial aid process and forms during senior year, our financial aid specialists provide support with FAFSA and CSS Profile completion, as well as detailed aid offer evaluation. This service is available for an additional fee and guides families step-by-step through the technical aspects of the financial aid process.

Why “Schooling Doula”?

Transitions in education—especially between school levels or when entering college—can feel overwhelming, emotional, and full of unknowns. Brynnen chose the name Schooling Doula intentionally: just as a birth doula supports and calms a family through one of life’s biggest transitions, Brynnen seeks to guide students and caregivers through schooling transitions with expertise, compassion, and deep care.

She bridges two worlds: institutional systems (which often feel rigid, confusing, or opaque) and the lived experience of what families actually go through. Her job is to hold space, translate complexity, advocate when needed, and help you chart a path that’s aligned with your values, hopes, and strengths.

Because she’s been in your shoes—as educator, advisor, and parent—she knows that what matters isn’t just “what is possible,” but what’s possible for you, given your starting place, concerns, and dreams.

Words cannot express how grateful I am to have Brynnen as my college counselor and mentor. She is one of the most supportive, loving, and caring people I know. From editing my essays to answering all of my questions with a quick response time, she was always there to help me whenever I needed it

Transitions are big. But you don’t have to walk them alone. I’m here to guide, advocate, and simplify what often feels messy, overwhelming, or unfair. Whether you’re in middle school, preparing for high school, or in the throes of college admissions, the right support makes all the difference.

If you’d like to see how this might work for your family, let’s start with a meet & greet. (No pressure, no hard sell — just clarity and conversation.)

Brynnen was super knowledgeable on the college admissions process because I was pretty clueless about the whole thing before we started … Her edits were really good and clear without erasing my own voice.
